Snails for Dinner?

I was about to prepare broccoli last night, when I discovered a live snail on it. It had been in the refrigerator overnight, and yet it was still alive and well. It had even done a little bit of its dirty business right on the broccoli. I found it gross, but M said this proved that the vegetables we get are fresh and come straight from the farmers. Well, he is right, but… yuck. I washed it thoroughly and then steaming does kill everything. Then I took little snail downstairs and placed it on a plant. That was my good deed for the week.

The electrician was here yesterday as well, as there are a number of things to fix around the flat. I consider myself very useful with things around the house such as hammering, putting furniture together, drilling, and the like. But I find electricity very intimidating. Perhaps it was too many electric shocks as a child (yes, I did know you are not supposed to touch plugs with wet hands nor pull on wires, but some things have to be learned the hard way). I watched intriguingly as he installed a ceiling light. I would have been afraid to go near the wires. To make it more interesting, there was no light in the room so I had to aim a steady light onto it, or perhaps risk his electrocution.

I did learn that in Malta they do not put light switches inside the bathroom. Now that this was pointed out, in retrospect I do realise that every house I have been to has their bathroom light switches outside the door. It seems a little excessively cautious. Many other countries have light switches inside the bathroom and I have never heard of any problems. I can also envision many older siblings turning the lights off as a way to torment younger siblings in the middle of a shower. Poor Maltese youngsters.

  1. No way! Just the other day I found a snail in my lettuce! I just had a tiny glimpse of something crawling out, but that was enough to wake up the whole block with my high pitched scream.. hehehe… The snail must have survived for A WEEK in my refrigerator! Anyway, after the initial shock I also took it outisde to plant it on a nice yummy(hope so) green leave.
I guess, that really proofs local is fresh!

Do they dry their hair outside the bathroom door too? Forget electric toothbrushes… HAHAHA. Oh, I kid. I’m reading about your snails instead of studying for my finals. By the way, I hear snails are yummy. Taste like sauce you cook them in. Right.. back to vaccine effectiveness calculations as christmas carols drive me crazy on the background…. (I’m at a coffeeshop so I don’t catch a glimpse of my bed and succumb to sweet snooze temptations).

Just so that you know: quite a large number of Maltese actually have snails for dinner every once in a while. In fact, after it rains, if you go in the countryside, you’ll see quite a lot of people turning stones upside down (and dismantling rubble walls in the process) in search for snails.

I could never figure how they could eat something as disgusting (you should see how horrible they smell when they’re being prepared!) despite being 100% Maltese, but go figure…

I have tried eating snails cos I felt brave and they were free at the bar. The sauce that they were doused in helped, but the sliminess is difficult to digest (no pun intended!)

I love escargot! It’s really quite tasty and has roughly the same consistency as cooked mushrooms. So for me, eating snails isn’t the disgusting part. What’s gross is that it had left its slime and feces on the broccoli.

I guess your experiences with real electric shocks explain your fear of static electricity. All these years, I just attributed it to the fact that Lima didn’t have static electricity!

As for the light switches, only a younger sibling would understand this! When I was growing up, the bathroom switch was, in fact, located outside. And yes, my sisters did take advantage of this. Though I must say it wasn’t one of their favorite tricks. Probably because I could too easily gain equal revenge.
